HOW CAN YOU ENSURE THE SAFETY OF YOUR CHILD WHEN UNDERGOING ANESTHESIA DURING DENTAL PROCEDURES?
Choosing the Right Pediatric Anesthesiologist is Critical in Safeguarding the Wellbeing of Your Child During Any Surgical Procedure
Orange County, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, Laguna Hills, CA – “Parents should understand completely who is providing anesthesia for their child’s dental procedure,” according to Dr. Alikhani.
Shar Alikhani, M.D., a Board Certified physician anesthesiologist, has undergone advanced fellowship training in pediatric anesthesia. He has served as the Chief of Anesthesia at Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) at Mission for more than ten years, and he has performed more than 20,000 pediatric anesthetics. He is the founder of MobiSurg, a ground-breaking new concept in mobile anesthesiology and patient care that now allows young children and hard-to-treat patients the ability to undergo anesthesia for dental procedures – safely and without sacrificing the quality and built-in safeguards of a hospital – in the comfort and relaxed environment of their own dentist’s office.
Says Dr. Alikhani, “There are many different types of providers out there offering similar services: dentist anesthesiologists (DDS or DMD), doctors of osteopathy (DO), nurse anesthetists (RN), and medical doctors (MD). The training, background, credentials and experience of all these practitioners is different, and they can all refer to themselves as “Doctor”. This lack of transparency makes it difficult to know the credentials of your anesthesia provider which may require some in-depth research. It is definitely more challenging to administer anesthesia to kids if you don’t have the proper training and experience. As the former Chief of Anesthesiology at a major Children’s hospital for 10 years, it is my passion to provide the highest quality of care to my pediatric patients in the office – the same quality care found in a hospital setting. It is very very important for parents, pediatricians and dentists to know who is providing the anesthesia to their children and what kind of training and back up support they have.
- First, it is essential for parents to know they have a choice in their child’s anesthesiologist. They should make the best and safest choice for their child. Parents should make sure they are using an MD anesthesiologist who is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), and preferably has minimum 1 year fellowship training in pediatric anesthesiology from a reputable children’s hospital, in addition to hospital experience in taking care of sick children who have undergone major surgery.
- Second, it is equally as important to understand the anesthesiologist’s plan for emergencies. Make certain that the anesthesiologist has a hospital quality emergency cart with pediatric specific resuscitation equipment, and a team of personnel trained in PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support); accreditation as a surgical setting by an accrediting agency such as the AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care) or the IMQ (Institute for Medical Quality) ensures that these guidelines are followed. It is very easy to cut corners in this line of business and show up with a duffle bag or a tackle box of supplies and medications, or machines and monitors that have not been kept to hospital standards.”
Dr. Alikhani founded MobiSurg to fill a need in the medical world – safe, hospital-quality anesthesia for children, hard-to-treat patients and people seeking privacy and affordability within the comfort of their doctor’s office.
Dr. Shar Alikhani is a board-certified Physician anesthesiologist and the former Director of Anesthesiology at Children’s Hospital Orange County at Mission. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiologists and trained at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he also served as Chief Resident and as a clinical faculty member. He was a Fellow in Pediatric Anesthesia at Children’s Hospital in Boston, the top rated pediatric teaching facility of Harvard Medical School.
